FRIDAY 20TH APRIL 2018
The Birthday Rant: Get off my lawn!

It's okay to be white...

Hang on, give me a minute... It shall all become clear.

If you've been to South Dunedin lately, you may have seen the posters that someone's been putting up around the place that say "It's okay to be white". Technically, they're right. It IS okay to be white, in the same sense that it's okay to be any colour - even Orange (although really, unless you're an Oompa Loompa then it's cultural appropriation). Colour is a result of DNA and ethnic background so that the fact that there are many different colours doesn't really mean anything - it just is.

The statement "It's okay to be white", is not really about being okay to be white though is it - It's about the fact that some people feel uncomfortable that people who aren't white now share our community. It's about the fact that you can't tell the same racist jokes that you could in the good old days - and then laugh it off as just a 'joke'. It's about feeling uncomfortable about a legacy of racism (in this country and others) and if that makes you feel it's not okay to be white - then that says a lot about you as a person.

The phrase "It's okay to be white" is a code word... It's a dog whistle (as they say), that is meant to make racism and racist ideas sound okay... to sound reasonable... To make it seem as though, "Hey, we're GOOD PEOPLE concerned about our welfare".

Well buddy, not on my watch. Cause, you see, I went to get some fish N chips last night and I saw your poster, so if you're wondering where they went - It was ME, I ripped them down. And I'll do it agin if you put them back up.

Cause this ain't about white people being in any kind of danger - this is about your insecurities, and your inadequacies. And frankly, I feel sorry for you. This world is not about who we shut out... It's about who we let in. So this is my birthday message to you, brother or sister, open your heart to the others out there, because they will make you stronger, they will help to make you better. It ain't about your colour, it's about your humanity.

I'mma let Michael Jackson break it down for you...

FRIDAY 6TH APRIL 2018
Get off my lawn!: FAKE NEWS

Get of my lawn!: FAKE NEWS

FAKE NEWS is the news again this week with the story of US Media Company Sinclair Broadcast Group forcing its station's News Anchors to read a pre-prepared statement condemning FAKE NEWS.

This may seem like a good thing, however, the corporation is ideologically aligned with US President Donald Trump and the statement is intended to back up his claims that ALL media critical of him is FAKE NEWS.

The Company regularly orders its stations to air 'must-read' segments all of which either support the President, or, Conservative Ideology. I'm not going to go into things fully because others have done so better than I could - I'll link John Oliver's segment from Last Week Tonight on the Pillow Fort programme page. Check it out.

You can say, 'Well that's the States - what relevance does it have here?'

Unfortunately, the same trends that affect overseas news companies sooner or later end up here. We've known for a long time that news outlets in NZ can be 'economical' with the truth at times. Often what gets reported first when a story breaks isn't the whole truth - it eventually gets corrected but those initial reports dominate the narrative.

Beware those with the loudest voices in media - opinion gets mixed in with fact and itself becomes fact in the media conciousness.

This week Garth McVicar from the Sensible Sentencing Trust celebrated the death of a man shot by Police. He sez it's to 'stimulate debate' - we know nothing of the man or what happened (as yet) but for some the facts are already settled. It could be that indeed the man was 'no good' - but we don't know that. And celebrating the death of a man whom you know nothing about is frankly, sick.

So, do yourself a favour - when you hear a story that gets your blood boiling - wait... Don't comment on social media (cause that only encourages them) wait for the facts and then decide.

Cause we live in the age of FAKE NEWS and FAKE VIEWS... Don't let yourself become a victim to it - the only way to beat it, is to think...

FRIDAY 23RD MARCH 2018
Get off my lawn!: It's time we talked about Plastic

Get off my lawn!: It's time we talked about Plastic

My laziness is truly epic... When I want to be, I am a World Champion at laziness - I'd win a medal at the Laziness Olympics but I probably wouldn't go cause I was too lazy. So when I say that we humans are lazy and it's killing the planet I want you to know that I too am part of the problem.

Plastic - In the Pacific Ocean there is an area that's twice the size of Texas that is filled with Plastic - micro plastics are entering the food chain - we are literally destroying life on this planet with it.

We'd love to do something about it but the truth is we're too lazy - now I'm not talking about changing our individual behaviour - I'm talking about changing the system that allows Plastic - often made for single use - to polute our environment.

That would mean organisation and effort, and like I said, we're too lazy.

It might hurt the economy a little bit, and like I said, we're too lazy.

We'd rather watch the Great Pacific Garbage Patch grow bigger and bigger, cause it's all about money and convenience.

Politicians won't do anything about it - cause they know they'll never have to. Why should they when we won't? There's no votes in it.

The good news, however, is that if climate change floods the country we'll be able to live on the floating mound of plastic. The bad news, is that we'll be floating on a dead ocean.

I think I've just realised that I'm far too lazy to do that - it's easier just to try and save the oceans from the Plastic in the first place... Cause the alternative is too much hard work

FRIDAY 16TH MARCH 2018
Get Off My Lawn!: Why I feel bad that some second year law students will miss out on their dreams of getting drunk and naked.

With the cancellaton of Law Camps at both Auckland & Otago Universities there have been reports of students who're disappointed at what they see as a rite of passage being taken away from them - let's just take away for a moment the fact that some students felt deeply uncomfortable and pressured to take part in some events they didn't want to, but I promise you we'll come back to it - previous generations have had the freedom to explore themselves at University with events like these and the fact is - there are some people who want to participate in things like this and they feel they've been unfairly targeted. They have the agency to make decisions for themselves according to their free will - and the fact that that has been taken away from them is sad... it is... But... I mentioned earlier the previous generations - I'm talking your parent's and grandparent's generations. They're the ones who ruined it all - they're the ones who burnt couches, vomited everywhere and had the really gross flat initiations - which is why you can't do those things now.

And it's the same with the law camps - this year's camps have been cancelled because of previous behaviour - much of it from before the current batch of students were even here. So, second year law students... you're being punished for something you didn't do - and I do feel sad for you, however this is a learning moment, so, think about for a moment the people who wanted the law camp experience but didn't want to be pressured into doing things they were uncomfortable with - because that affects their free will and agency too... And some will say 'if they weren't cool with it they shouldn't go...' And again - that infringes their agency and free will... But you're Lawyers, so I expect you to tell me I'm wrong and charge me $200 dollars an hour for the privilege of doing so :)

FRIDAY 2ND MARCH 2018
Get off my lawn!: Lyin' ain't easy

Lyin' ain't easy...
I used to get paid to lie for a living... Saying things like:
"Yes, mam... The fish is delicious"
"The best sausages this side of the bombays!!"
"This investment account is the best way to protect your savings!"
Was I lying - damn right I was... And I knew it. But, they paid me, so that made it alright. And that's the thing... Lying for free - well that's terrible. But lying for money, well, that's a valuable skill that can make you very rich.
If you disagree, then look at all the great jobs you can get as a professional liar:
Tobacco Company Executive
Public Relations
Communications Director in Trump's White House
You can be paid well, and be respected in Society - doesn't that say something about our society? Doesn't that explain the state of the world today?
Climate Change, War, Poverty - somewhere, someone is getting paid big dollars to make sure those things happen, all while saying "I'm just paying the mortgage". The Yuppie Nuremberg Defense (Google it).
What can we do about it? Well... Liars gonna lie - let's not give them any respect, when you hear a lie - laugh. Because your laughter at these ridiculous statements will rob them of any seriousness. And when you get to know who the liars are - turn off your tv when you see them, turn your back don't give them any oxygen.
Now, yes. We could talk about post-modernism and perspectivism rendering truth subjective but I think you know what I'm talking about.
Liars only gonna lie - if we let them...

FRIDAY 2ND MARCH 2018
Get off my lawn!: A gay love song

I've recently discovered this incredible track from 2016 - evrything about it from the instrumentation to the lyrics to the lazy vocal style - it's incredible! Ticks all the musical boxes for me.... I was singing it in the shower this morning and when I got to the chorus I realised there was something unexpected about the lyrics...
A male singer was singer...And the worst things I ever did, was to this same boy... I couldn't help it, I meesed things up...
I suddenly thought ' This is a gay love song!' - Not GAY as in LAME but gay as in two men in love - now of course that posed a conumdrum for my heteronorative brain - I'd love to say that I'm incredibly WOKE ... and that it should've been water off a soaped up man's back - but that's not how humans work -(I think) - we take in new information and we've got to let it roll around our brain for a while - and so that's what I did.
I was reminded about the first time I ever saw two men in love kissing - the first time I realised that Love is Love - regardless of the shape of your genitals. Provided it's consenting adults - Love is beautiful - no matter what form it takes.
SO, whenever I sing this song in the shower, I'm not going to change the lyrics at all - the song resonated with me because if you'ver lived and loved then you've probably hurt people regardless of whether or not you wanted to. I feel that pain - I've done it to others and others have done it to me. So here's the track - hope you enjoy
This is Rostam with Gavity Don't Pull Me...
