Get off my lawn!: Tradition...

There's lots of things that are traditional that we don't even know why we do it anymore - It's just tradition... Take marriage for example.

Carrying the bride over the threshold started off because usually the bride was unwilling... Let that sink in for a moment.

A best man started off as the guy who would help you abduct the bride... Let that sink in for a moment.

There's lots of stuff out there that we do that if we stop to think about, we realise it's pretty horrible. Some of these things (like those I mentioned previously) have devolved to a nice little tradition that - despite it's history - are fairly harmless.

You may have noticed a tradition - reported in this weeks Critic - that people at a particular Hall have always done. Nobody ever batted an eyelid. It was just something that happened. Even in the climate of the #metoo moment, it seems like noone ever questioned it - because that's the POWER of tradition. It bubbles along under the surface, hijacking our brains and unless we actively think about it - it just continues...

I'm not going to name the Hall, but you can read about it in Critic, because I don't want to shame them - because this is a teachable moment... Things can be learnt from this and we can all go forth into the future better than we were before.

Everytime we feel the weight of Tradition, we need to stop and think "Is this right?", "Is this still who we are?". Because Tradition can be something that either leads us to the fututre, or traps us in the past.

It's up to us to decide...

Get off my lawn!: Poi E

It's difficult now to think that this track was so revolutionary when it came out - the 80s were a period when racism still played a major part in public discourse.

Just 6 years earlier, New Zealand lost its collective mind when a telecom operator answered the phone with 'Kia Ora'. The Sprinkbok Tour of 1981 had brought massive social disruption, and Maoridom was entering its renaissance period. But the big problem was how to engage Maori youth in their culture.

Many had said they should learn the traditional forms, but Maori youth were looking for something new.

Māori linguist Ngoi Pēwhairangi and Maori music legend Dalvanius Prime had a different idea. Pewhairangi's intent in writing the song in such a way was to promote Māori ethnic pride among young Māori people in a popular format. Drawing on the inspiration of the then new breakdancing experience and black American soul, Poi E performed by the Patea Maori Club - a group of laid off freezing workers - rocketed to number one on the Aotearoa New Zealand music charts.

And for the first time - urban Maori Youth were electrified by Maori culture. And a kiwi music legend was born...
