Hosted by g.bert

Connect to the Radia Network - radia.fm

Radia is a network of independent radio stations who have a common interest in promoting and producing artworks for the radio, and in forming related projects based on broadcasting and cultural exchange. We produce a weekly radio show that is broadcast by each of the member radio stations. Our shows represent the local artistic community of each station, whilst at the same time these new works point to an emergent collective notion of self-determined art for radio. Tune in at 10.30pm every Sunday after W.A.M when Gilbert May presents the latest Syndicated Radia Broadcast.

THIS WEEK
CFRC 101.9fm, Queen's University Radio, Kingston, ON

Radia Season 22, Episode 261

“A Minute in the Life of a CFRC volunteer”

Currently, at CFRC, there is an undeniable surge in creative energy that has been rare in the 90 year history of our station. For the past two years a critical mass of programmers have gotten together to accept all reasonable, and unreasonable, challenges for producing adventurous, risky, mind-bending radio and performing live radio dramas in front of skeptical audiences. To commemorate this moment in time, a call was sent out to represent a minute in the life of a CFRC volunteer. The purposefully vague request was meant to show the diversity of creative ideas present at our station in our small town. For our first Radia submission, many of the same people worked together, for long nights (often), in the same room, producing a radio drama, and for our second submission, they work together again....but this time as independent radio producers.

Thanks to Michael, Melissa, Irina, Carolyn, Jessie, Aleks, Melinda, Scott, Kristiana, Neven, Elson, Henrik, Bill, Chris, Christopher, Owen & Julia for participating.

Radia Syndicated Broadcast - Radio One 91fm / The Village is Quiet - Gilbert May

Australian artist Patrick Hartigan exhibited a series of water colours in 2009 entitled 'The Village is Quiet' - a show which was complemented by the publication of a series of short stories and a limited release dvd under the same title. Producer g.bert invited Hartigan to record a reading of a selection of the stories as a gesture toward a continued multiplication of media in Hartigan's work through (and despite) which the 'village remains quiet'.

Hartigan's facility in isolating and expressing the subtleties and idiosyncracies of the simple everyday life of an unnamed contemporary Slovakian village in fact borders on a mythical expression - a kind of singular exemplarity. Littered as his work is with post-soviet remnants (the public address system that still 'broadcasts' via loudspeakers, for example) and the consequences of EU expansion (the evident desertion of youth), Hartigan's village and its eloquent quietude speaks a kind of obscure generality (seen, as it is, through the eyes of an antipodean outsider finding feet and language in the village's almost empty streets and homes).

A simple radio production (artifacts of recording included) accentuates the simplicity of Hartigan's means. Visit http://www.brettmcdowellgallery.com/patrickhartigan09.html and http://www.darrenknightgallery.com/artists/hartigan/artist.htm for Hartigan's visual story.

Small Journeys Long Distance, Lucinda Guy

Shows from the Radia Network travel... from one artist's ears to another's. From one small community to another, far away. Within the shows journeys take place too, whether a walk through the shopping centre or a trip into space.
This collage, built from fragments of some of 2009's contributions, celebrates these journeys large and small; what they have in common and what sets them apart.

This show is an abridged version of the one made for Kunstradio on ORF in Austria. If you'd like to hear the full version it's here:

THIS WEEK
This Radia show from free103point9 in New York comes from Tarikh Korula's performance Sat. Oct. 3 at the NY Art Book Fair sponsored by the Printed Matter book store at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in Queens. Korula says of the performance: 'I’ve always been too cheap to collect vinyl. Instead, over the past decade, I’ve amassed an eclectic mix of sound files that I’ve used in installation and improvised performance. For the Book Fair show, I'm using two turntables and a broken crossfader to que, mix and manipulate sound from my quirky archive. Sounds include brown noise, EMS dispatches, contact mic recordings of buildings, personal compositions, reappropriated media and archival news and radio reports. The hope is to create a spartan and at times dense collage of sound, documentation and fiction.'

Mayon Volcano is the title of a multi-layer art work by Andreas Loeschner Gornau, an artist from Halle living on philippines.
Loeschner visited the island from 2006 on different times- also during the catastrophe in 2006 after long rain and volcano activities. Our half an hour pictures the emotional impacts during the travels. Loeschners voice got a little help by his personal computer.

Radia season 21 n°240 - Orange 94.0, Vienna - Cuisine Viennoise
This time the RADIA-Team of ORANGE 94.0 presents a show from Udo Israel.
In order to finish and start a new old life he agreed to produce an end into cuisine.

Cuisine Viennoise

Tafelspitz is considered to be the national dish of Austria. If you visit the Austrian capital Vienna, you for sure will find this speciality on almost every menu. But the world famous so called Viennese Cuisine developed from very different sources. The former Austro-Hungarian monarchy was a living multicultural empire, influencing the culture, language and of course cuisine of its capital. Even today Vienna is a melting pot of various cultures. „Cuisine Viennoise“ is a journey through kitchens, restaurants and Take aways in Vienna collecting recepies and stories about dishes very often cooked today.

Radia season 21 n°239 - Mobile Radio - MORSONATA [mobile-radio.net]

This is the radia edit of a hour long live radio show produced by Mobile Radio for the FON festival in Barrow-in-Furness, England. With Barrow being home to Europe's biggest submarine shed and neighbouring Lake District having hosted Kurt Schwitters for the last years of his life we decided to combine these two influences. Schwitters' Ursonate performed in morse code by one of Barrow's retired submariners is the underlying thread to the show that includes live music and field recordings by FON artists in residence Haco, Susan Matthews, Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann.

Radia season 21 n°234 - Radio Campus Brussels

'Awaiting for the waters to rise' by Frederic Alstadt

'Into lovers strings,
crumbled under soft shakes from the strech of the oblivion,
tainted simple encounters, bellow the lights of married chords

it's a sincere road i followed,
time for a pause,
strewn of dark blue sound wires,
remanences of an unbordered amaricana '

Christophe Guiraud

- - -

Traces of a hot & wet summers strings improvisations,
I edited the two first sessions we made with my friend Amélie Grosselet,
She was playing guitar, and I was playing apalachian dulcimer processed with different analog effets.
As i've spent a lot of time in Venice this year, designing sound for an installation, i still had that strongly in mind.
Water was everywhere there, around me and into the sound I was working on, I was amazingly obsessed by the 'aqua alta' submerging the streets,
These random rises inspired me.
The liquid element's travel from meting snow recorded in the Alps in late march to Antwerpen industrialised rivers sides, followed our strings

Flood is to come
